Attachment view

Allow guests to view specific attachment extensions.

Forum attachments often contain valuable content. Sometimes you want to share certain types of files with unregistered visitors, while keeping other attachments private. Attachment view gives you that control. You can choose exactly which file extensions guests can see.

For example, you might allow guests to view images like jpg or png, or read documents like pdf or txt. Other attachments remain hidden from unregistered users.

How it works

After installing the add-on, you can enter a list of allowed extensions. When a guest tries to view or download an attachment, XenForo checks the extension against your list. If it matches, the guest can access the file. If it does not match, the guest sees the usual no-permission message.

The add-on works with all attachment types that XenForo supports, including images, documents, and archives. It does not change permissions for logged-in members. Those users are still controlled by your normal user group permissions.

Simple and safe

Attachment view is lightweight and does not require template edits. You can change the allowed extensions at any time. If you remove an extension from the list, guests immediately lose access to those files.

This add-on is ideal for forums that have public resources but still want to keep most attachments private. It gives you fine-grained control without complex configuration.

It lets visitors who normally cannot open attachments, usually guests, see full-size attachments of the file types you choose. Images in your threads stop showing a permission error or a small thumbnail and open for guests the way they do for members. Everything else, such as zip or PDF files, still follows your normal attachment permissions.

Yes, it is free. Download and unzip the package, upload the files to your server, then install the add-on from your AdminCP. After that, go to AdminCP, Options, and open D.C Style - Attachment View to configure it.

The list lives in AdminCP under Setup, Options, D.C Style - Attachment View. Enter the extensions one per line, without the dot, and in lower case; the default list is png, jpg, jpeg, gif and ico. Note that jpg does not cover jpeg, which is why both are in the default list, and if you empty the list the add-on does nothing and XenForo's normal permissions apply everywhere.

Yes. Version 1.1.2, released on 2025-08-19, added compatibility with XenForo 2.3. The add-on runs on XenForo 2.2.0 and newer.

Yes, for the file types on your list, anyone who has the link can open the attachment, including images posted in private forums or direct messages. Someone who cannot see the private thread still cannot find the image through your forum, but the image will open if its address is shared or guessed. Only list file types you are comfortable treating as public.
