Good XenForo member engagement comes from three things: members get answers, they get noticed, and they have a reason to come back tomorrow. These seven ideas cover all three. The first three use features XenForo already has, and the last four need an add-on.
What keeps members posting
People rarely leave a forum because it lacks a feature. They leave because their first post got no reply, or because nothing new catches their eye when they visit. So start with the basics before you add anything.
Each idea below says what it needs and where to set it up. Pick two or three that fit your community, rather than all seven at once.
Three ideas XenForo already has
1. Reply to every first post within a day
A new member's first thread is the moment that decides whether they stay. If it sits unanswered for a week, they rarely post again. Ask your staff to check new threads with no replies every day, and answer or welcome each one.
It costs nothing but attention. On a busy forum, share the job out: each moderator takes one or two forums. A reply that asks a follow-up question works better than a plain welcome, because it gives the newcomer a reason to post again.
2. Turn help forums into question forums
Since XenForo 2.2, a forum can be a question forum. Replies count as answers, members can vote on them, and the thread author or a moderator marks one as the solution. The solution then shows at the top of every page of the thread.
Solved questions give members a small win and give helpers credit. The Unsolved filter also shows your regulars exactly where help is needed. It suits support, how-to and buying-advice forums best. Keep open-ended chat in ordinary discussion forums.
3. Show trending and featured content where people land
XenForo 2.3 added a trending content widget. It ranks content by recent activity over the last seven days by default. You can order it by Hot, which favors newer content, or Top. Placed in a forum, it can show only that forum's trending threads.

4. Add stories for quick, casual posts
Not every member wants to write a thread. Stories give them a lighter way in: a photo, a short video or a line of text that disappears after a day. Members already know the format from Instagram and Facebook.
Story adds a stories bar above your forum list, with avatar rings for unseen stories. It also brings polls, comments, reactions, highlights and daily posting streaks. Members can share threads into a story too, which sends readers back to your discussions. Story 2 needs XenForo 2.3.
Each story has its own audience: everyone, members only, mutual follows or just the author. Guests can watch a few stories before the viewer asks them to register, which turns curiosity into sign-ups.
5. Show who is active with leaderboards
Recognition keeps regulars posting. XenForo's trophies reward members for milestones. A visible leaderboard adds a daily reason to take part.
Forum Statistics adds tabbed lists to the forum list or a sidebar: top contributors, most interactive members, trending threads and more. Its Unanswered threads tab also helps with the first idea. It is free, works on XenForo 2.2 and newer, and has a full page of its own at /forum-stats.
Each tab has its own time period, so a leaderboard can cover the last seven or thirty days. That gives newer members a fair chance to reach the top. Use the compact layout in a sidebar and the tabbed or grid layout above the forum list.
6. Give members a game to come back for
Games work well on forums that already reward activity with points. If you use DragonByte Credits, members earn credits for posting and can spend them somewhere fun.
Rock Paper Scissors lets members bet credits against each other in games of two to eight players. There is also a quick match against the computer. Winners get alerts, and the game page shows open games waiting for players. It needs XenForo 2.3 and DragonByte Credits 5.6.0 or newer.
You set the smallest and largest bet and a small tax on each game, which keeps your points economy in balance. Games with more players run as a short tournament bracket, and the winner takes the pool.
7. Let members share each other's posts
Profile posts are where members talk to each other rather than to a topic. Profile Post Share lets members share another member's profile post. It can show a share count and alert the original author, which is another small reason to come back. You choose which user groups may share.
How to measure XenForo member engagement
Pick two ideas, set them up, and give them a month before you judge. Then compare these numbers with the month before:
- How many new members post a second time.
- How many threads get a first reply within a day.
- How many members post at least once a week.
Change one thing at a time where you can. If you add three features in one week, you won't know which one helped.
Watch for the quiet signs too. Are regulars answering newcomers without being asked? Do members mention a story or a leaderboard in their posts? XenForo member engagement is working when members start doing the welcoming for you.
