Let members choose a thread icon with Thread Icon

Thread Icon lets members pick a Font Awesome icon for their thread, shown next to the title in thread lists, the thread itself and search results. The icon picker appears on the new-thread form once two settings agree: the forum is allowed to use icons, and the member has permission. Out of the box neither is set, so after install nobody sees the picker. It needs XenForo 2.3.

Choose the forums

Go to Setup > Options > D.C Style - Thread Icon. Applicable forums lists your forums. Hold Ctrl (Cmd on a Mac) and click each forum where threads may have an icon. Only threads in those forums can have one, and the picker does not appear anywhere else.

Grant the permission

Go to Groups & permissions > User group permissions, open the Registered group (and any other group that should use icons), and in Forum permissions set Can use thread icon to Yes.

Note: Set this permission on the user group, not in Node permissions. The add-on checks it for the member as a whole, not per forum, so changing it for a single forum has no effect. To limit icons to certain forums, use Applicable forums instead.

Choose where icons appear

Two more options shape how icons look:

• Icon display position: Before thread title (the default), After thread title, or Depends on user selection to let the member decide for each thread.
• Display thread icon in: tick Thread view, Forum view & Widget threads and Search results to choose where they show. All three are on by default.

Icons also appear in XenForo's New threads widget and the [D.C Style] New Threads widget from D.C Style Widgets.

Picking an icon

With both settings in place, members see an icon picker when they start a thread, in quick thread and when they edit the thread. The picker lists Font Awesome icons, and the member can choose a weight: Solid, Regular, Light or Duotone. Nothing changes for threads that have no icon.

If icons do not show

• No picker at all: check the forum is in Applicable forums and the member's groups have Can use thread icon. Test as a member, not as an administrator.
• Icon chosen but not shown in lists: check Display thread icon in. If that is right, your style may have changed the thread list templates in a way that stops Thread Icon's template changes from applying. Template modification errors and outdated templates shows how to find them.
• Changes not visible: a page cache or Cloudflare may be serving an old copy. Changes not showing?

Upgrading from an older version

Thread Icon 1.0.3 no longer needs the [TC] Component Library add-on. You can upgrade over the top of an older version as usual: how to upgrade an add-on. Forums still on XenForo 2.2 should stay on the 1.0.1 Patch Level 1 build, which is the last one for 2.2 and is listed in the version history on the Thread Icon page.
